Ingredients:
- 1 cup white rice
- 1 cup lentils (dal)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon ginger, grated
- 1 tablespoon cumin seeds
- 1 tablespoon coriander seeds
- 1 tablespoon turmeric
- 1 tablespoon garam masala
- 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Chopped cilantro, for garnish
Instructions:
- Rinse the rice and soak it in water for 20 minutes. Drain and set aside.
- Rinse the lentils and add them to a pot with 4 cups of water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to low, and simmer for about 20 minutes or until the lentils are soft and fully cooked.
- In a separate pan, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin and coriander seeds and cook for a few minutes until fragrant.
- Add the onion, garlic, and ginger to the pan and cook until the onion is translucent.
- Add the tomatoes and cook for a few minutes until they break down and become saucy.
- Add the turmeric and garam masala to the pan and cook for a minute to release their flavors.
- Combine the cooked lentils with the tomato and spice mixture. Add salt and pepper to taste.
- Cook the rice according to package instructions.
- Serve the dal bhat tarkari hot, with the rice and lentil curry on one plate and the vegetables (tarkari) on another. Garnish with cilantro.
